Camino Real Ranger District Prescribed Burn planned Nov. 28
Taos, NM (November 26, 2018) - For Immediate Release. Fire managers on the Camino Real Ranger District of the Carson National Forest expect to begin ignitions on the Ojo Sarco prescribed burn as early as November 28, 2018, as conditions allow.
This 150 acre unit consists of burning slash piles south of Ojo Sarco, off State Highway 76. The slash piles are composed of dry vegetation such as tree tops, limbs, branches, brush, and other cut miscellaneous materials. The slash is created from previous thinning and associated fuelwood removal activities.
The purpose is to reduce the threat of high severity, high intensity wildfire to the public, adjacent private property and natural resources in the Wildland Urban Interface area that surrounds the communities. Prescribed burns are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.
Smoke may be visible from the following areas: Ojo Sarco, State Highway 76, El Valle, and Las Trampas.
Pile burn operations require moisture in the surrounding vegetation and as such typically produce lighter smoke than a prescribed broadcast burn.
