JOB TITLE: Grounds Maintenance Technician -Temporary

SALARY: $10.75 per hour

This is a Temporary/Non- Classified

DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of working level semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, beautification and repair of Taos County grounds, recreation facilities, parks, and general environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

One (1) year of experience in the maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of turf, facilities and related environment.
      
Sufficient education and experience to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties.

Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Qualifications:

Read, write, speak and comprehend the English language.

Some knowledge of maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractor, power seeders, aerators, thatches, trimmers, etc.; landscape and sprinkler systems; irrigation pumps; of hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations; of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and pesticides, and proper application of the same; of turf and greens management; of interpersonal communication skills.

Some Skill in use of lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, chain saw, edger’s, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf and grounds maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical work; the operation of various types of light equipment; basic mechanics, basic electrical and basic plumbing operations, basic carpentry and basic masonry.

Use of PPE is required.

Must possess high level of customer service at all times.

Must possess valid state of New Mexico driver’s license.

POSITION PURPOSE

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of working level semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, beautification and repair of Taos County grounds, recreation facilities, parks, and general environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES 

Performs general grounds maintenance duties; maintains small buildings, pavilions, shelters, picnic areas, benches, bleachers, ball fields, basketball courts and other grounds and recreation facilities; assures proper operation of sprinkler and irrigation systems; may assist in framing, concrete, masonry work, painting, roofing or other semi-skilled construction and facility maintenance activities related to basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical; assures proper maintenance of playground equipment; conducts safety inspection of grounds, sidewalks, walkways, parking lots, bleachers, basketball courts and playground equipment.

Assists in the maintenance and installation of irrigation and sprinkler systems

Assists with spraying projects for the prevention or eradication of pests, fungus, and insects harmful to park plants, trees, shrubs and other environ; selects appropriate chemicals to accomplish task; maintains records of spraying activities; assures chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with county, state, or federal regulations; operates and maintains spraying equipment.

Ability to operate and maintain a variety of types of small and light equipment such as mowers, sod cutters, chain saws, pruning equipment, aeration tractor, weed cutters and various grounds and hand tools; performs routine and regular maintenance on equipment and tools to assure efficiency and safety.

Ability to operate and maintain complex lawn mowing equipment; mows and trims grass, bushes and shrubs; assists in pruning activities on trees, shrubs and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees; stimulates health plant growth through custom pruning and cutting; aerate and fertilize lawns

Performs general landscape and gardening duties; plants and transplants trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers etc. as directed to develop attractive parks and grounds; performs various fertilization techniques using dry and liquid chemicals. Familiarity with the use and operation of a shovel, rake, pick, etc. ability to use and operate landscaping and gardening tools.

Performs seasonal duties such as snow removal, weed cutting and removal, water line winterization, etc.; performs general maintenance of softball fields, basketball courts; grooms and maintains playing surfaces; monitors and inspects grounds; monitors and inspects equipment and tools.

Performs miscellaneous seasonal or periodic duties; assists with snow removal by operating snow blower and shovels; performs various logistical and minor maintenance duties; sets up for special events, moves tables, chairs, and podiums; assembles tables and miscellaneous furniture upon delivery.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

Bilingual skills in English and the Spanish language

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. Candidate will work inside and outside in all weather conditions and with potential hazards including exposure to sun, wind, rain, snow, dust, and traffic. Possibility of physical risk. Possible exposure to harmful fumes. Limited overnight travel may be required from time to time.

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to: walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.  May be required to stand for long periods.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Mental demands: There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with a wide variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.
