JOB TITLE: Adult Detention Officer Cadet  

ENTRY LEVEL: $12.55 per hour 

CLASSIFICATION: Classified/Non - Exempt (FLSA)

DEFINITION: Performs a variety trainee level technical and correction/detention duties intended to assure compliance with adult detention center operational polices practices and procedures. Maintains safety and security of the detention center and proper day-to-day care of inmates.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Education and Experience:

 
A. Graduation from high school and successful completion of specialized training provided by an approved standards and training organization or through in-service;

AND

B. Six (6mo.) months experience performing above and related duties;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

2. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 
Some knowledge of the criminal justice system; care and inmate management; general supervision techniques applied in a detention environment;  general law enforcement practices and procedures;  law enforcement; principles, methods and techniques of effective supervision; legal environment associated with law enforcement; local, state and federal laws and regulations; criminal codes and jail standards; departmental standard operating procedures; fundamentals of proper search and seizure; inmate classification methods and guidelines, federal, state and local laws and regulations related to jail activities; New Mexico Criminal Code, New Mexico Jail Standards, courtroom security methods and processes, court processes and protocol, computer operations and related software; elementary first aid techniques and procedures and CPR; basic principles of psychology and sociology; complex records management systems and legal guidelines.

Skill in the operation of security equipment.

Ability to deal effectively with work related stress related workplace liabilities; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; manage physical aggression in detainees;  direct and maintain confidentiality in managing sensitive legal issues and cases; restrain physically violent prisoners;  react quickly to stressful or emergency situations;  operate a variety of types of office machines;   personal computer or terminal operation; write legible reports;  develop effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

 

3. Special Qualifications:

 

Must be 21 years of age.

Must possess a valid New Mexico driver’s license.

Must be willing to work on-call and shift assignments.

Must be willing to undergo an off-site skills assessment conducted by New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions.

Must be willing to undergo various physical, mental and background examinations prior to hiring.

Must complete “Defensive Driving” course.

Must complete “Safe Physical Management & Passive Restraint” course.

Must be a certified Detention Officer and maintain annually required training hours.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety trainee level technical and correction/detention duties intended to assure compliance with adult detention center operational polices practices and procedures. Maintains safety and security of the detention center and proper day-to-day care of inmates.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under immediate to close supervision of the Adult Sergeant, Lieutenant or Security Chief.

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Performs Some or All of the Following as a Trainee)

Resident Supervision: Operates observation devices as needed to maintain order and compliance with center programs, practices and policy; observes activities and behaviors of residents; assures proper operation of security devices, locks, etc.; admits visitors and officials into facility and various sections of the center.

Observe, interact, listen and respond to conduct and behavior of inmates; utilizes effective inter-personal communication skills as need to manage the behavior of inmates to enhance the safety and environment for inmates and staff; effecting disciplinary process when appropriate.

Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes; searches inmates and cells for contraband articles; patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infractions of rules and unsatisfactory attitudes or adjustment of prisoners, and reports observations to supervisor; performs inmate supervision during recreation and meal periods. 

Assures proper and regular maintenance of facility during assigned shift; performs general cleaning and sanitization of offices according to established cleaning schedules; supervises residents in performing general work assignments.

Transports and escorts inmates in transit between jail, courtroom, prisons, or other points, traveling by automobile or public transportation as required; secures inmate(s) in cell.

May serve as bailiff under the direction of the district court; performs a variety of security tasks specific to maintaining courtroom order and insuring that courtroom processes are adhered to; serves as jail security officer by carrying out specific plans and programs to assure safety of court personnel and protection of jail facilities and others; follows specific instructions from appropriate supervisors.

Performs cell checks and observes resident behaviors; conducts suicide watch to prevent related self-inflicted injury.

Booking: Performs various tasks associated with inmate admissions; fingerprints; searches inmates; books prisoners; reviews offense status and classification (violent, non-violent, etc.) to assess appropriate level of security and confinement; processes inmates for release; maintains paper work on each inmate being detained to include intake forms, acknowledgement of rights forms, daily reports court papers and other documents relating to detention, resident conduct and care; assures proper intake of resident, issues uniforms and personal care supplies, administers medications and provides meals.

Operates personal computer to input various types of inmate information into Sleuth program; updates resident records and files; assists to compile information and detail needed to prepare regular reports related to resident status, behavior and detention activities.

Releasing: Assures proper processing of release documents for detainees; updates records as required and out-processes juveniles according to established procedures; secures proper signatures on formal documents.

4. Work Environment:


Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, but subject to occasional travel.  Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty.  Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Tasks require variety of physical activities, occasionally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, turning, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing.  Mental application utilizes memory for details, ideas and written and verbal communications, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, guided and creative problem solving.  Occasional local travel required in performance of daily work assignments.  Occasional physical and muscular stress and potential injury related to dealing with aggressive, violent and combative offenders.
